Leeds beat Chelsea 3–1 as Blues lose ground in EPL title race

Chelsea’s pursuit of the Premier League title suffered a major setback on Wednesday night after a resurgent but relegation-threatened Leeds United handed them a 3–1 defeat at Elland Road.

The loss — Chelsea’s first in eight matches across all competitions — leaves Enzo Maresca’s side nine points behind league leaders Arsenal and raises fresh questions about the team’s consistency and resilience.

Already missing suspended midfielder Moisés Caicedo, the Blues looked flat and disjointed from the opening whistle. Their sluggish start proved costly as Leeds seized the early momentum, with Jaka Bijol powering home a header just six minutes into the game.

The home side doubled their lead shortly before the break through a thunderous long-range effort from Japan’s Ao Tanaka, punishing Chelsea’s lack of intensity and poor defensive structure.

Despite a much-improved second-half performance, the Blues were unable to climb out of the hole they dug. Substitute Pedro Neto sparked a brief resurgence with a neat finish early in the second half, but Chelsea’s chase for an equaliser fell apart when a catastrophic defensive error gifted Leeds their third goal.

Malo Gusto misplaced a pass inside his own box, Tosin Adarabioyo panicked under pressure, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin pounced after Robert Sanchez’s initial block to seal the result.

Maresca’s attempt to freshen the squad by resting Neto, Reece James, and Wesley Fofana backfired, as Chelsea struggled without rhythm or leadership. Liam Delap missed chances that could have altered the momentum, while returning forward Cole Palmer came close on his first appearance in two months but could not find the breakthrough.

The defeat further underlines Chelsea’s worrying trend when Caicedo is absent; the Blues have won just 29 percent of their league matches without the Ecuadorian in the starting XI. For Leeds, who had lost four straight before this fixture, the result provides a much-needed lift in their relegation battle, while Chelsea’s title ambitions take yet another hit.
