Profile of Ayo Oke, Ex-NIA DG named Ambassador-designate

Ayo Oke, former Director General of Nigeria’s National Intelligence Agency (NIA), has returned to national attention after President Bola Tinubu named him Ambassador-Designate two years after Nigeria last appointed envoys.
His nomination was among three non-career ambassadorial names forwarded to the Senate for confirmation, marking a major comeback for the retired intelligence chief who once faced one of Nigeria’s most controversial security scandals.
Early life
Ambassador Ayo Oke hails from Oyo State. He studied economics and political science at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, a foundation that helped shape his long career in diplomacy and intelligence.
Career in diplomacy and intelligence
Oke spent decades in Nigeria’s foreign service. He worked at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London before joining the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
At the agency, he served as Director (Regions), one of the top roles at NIA headquarters.
His rise culminated on 7 November 2013, when then-President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him Director General of the NIA, replacing Ezekiel Olaniyi Oladeji.
EFCC case
Oke’s leadership faced a major crisis in April 2017 when EFCC operatives discovered large sums of cash more than US$43 million, alongside pounds and naira in an apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi.

Oke later described the location as a “safe house”, but the discovery caused nationwide shock and raised questions about intelligence operations and accountability. The incident prompted President Muhammadu Buhari to suspend him immediately.
Following months of investigation, President Buhari dismissed Oke on 30 October 2017, acting on the findings of a panel led by the then Vice President.
The legal case that followed stayed unresolved for years. In June 2023, reports citing unnamed insiders revealed that top security chiefs had agreed to terminate the case “in the interest of national security”.
President Buhari approved the recommendation shortly before leaving office. On 9 June 2023, the Federal High Court in Lagos struck out the case after the EFCC formally withdrew the charges.
Life after the controversy
Oke stayed out of public view after the scandal. For several years, he maintained a low profile while debates around the Ikoyi cash discovery continued.
His recent nomination as Ambassador-Designate marks his return to the diplomatic stage, signalling a new chapter in the career of one of Nigeria’s most talked-about intelligence figures.
