Background
Issa Tchiroma was birthed on 10 September, 1946 in Garoua, North Region, Cameroon.
After completing his early education locally, he travelled to France, where he received technical training in transport and materials engineering.
Upon returning to Cameroon, he joined the Cameroon Railways Authority (Regifercam) in Douala as a materials and construction engineer.
Political journey
In April 1984, following a failed coup attempt against President Paul Biya, Tchiroma was arrested due to suspicions linked to his northern origin, despite having no involvement in the coup.
He was detained at Kondengui Prison and later transferred to Yoko Prison, where he endured harsh conditions for more than six years without formal charges.
During his imprisonment, Tchiroma taught himself English and gained a deeper understanding of Cameroon’s socio-political landscape. He was released in 1990.
After his release, Tchiroma joined the National Union for Democracy and Progress (UNDP), an opposition party led by Maigari Bello Bouba.
In 1992, he was elected to the National Assembly representing the Bénoué constituency.
Following the elections, President Biya appointed him Minister of Transport, a position he held from November 1992 to September 1996.
His inclusion in Biya’s government was controversial, as it divided opposition ranks, but it marked his entry into national governance.
Activism
In 1995, internal conflicts within the UNDP led to Tchiroma’s expulsion, after which he co-founded the National Alliance for Democracy and Progress (ANDP) with Hamadou Moustapha.

He later reconciled with the UNDP in 2002 and joined other northern politicians in calling for fairer political representation and development in Cameroon’s northern regions.
In 2004, Tchiroma played a leading role in efforts to unite the opposition for the presidential election, but internal disagreements led to a divided front and Biya’s eventual re-election.
Formation of the FSNC
In January 2007, Tchiroma founded his own political party, the Front for the National Salvation of Cameroon (FSNC), with the goal of promoting democracy, good governance, and national unity.
Despite often supporting government policies, he remained vocal about the need for reform and inclusive leadership.
Ministerial roles
Tchiroma returned to government in June 2009 as Minister of Communication, where he defended government policies and promoted media regulation.
In January 2019, he was appointed Minister of Employment and Vocational Training, overseeing national programs that improved access to technical education and reduced training costs for young Cameroonians.

Under his tenure, several training centers were established through partnerships with France, South Korea, the World Bank, and the African Development Bank.
Resignation
After decades of collaboration with President Biya’s administration, Tchiroma became increasingly disillusioned with what he described as “a stagnating system and a centralized power structure detached from the people.”
In June 2025, he resigned from the cabinet, marking his first public break from Biya’s government in over three decades.
Presidential Election
On 25 June 2025, Tchiroma announced his candidacy for the presidential election with the slogan “Le peuple au pouvoir / We are the power.”
He positioned himself as the voice of reform, pledging to restore institutional integrity and renew national unity.
