Gunmen kill man, kidnap woman in Edo community

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a young man identified as Christopher by suspected kidnappers in Auchi, Edo State.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday in the Igbira Camp area, located near a fertiliser depot and close to a military checkpoint in the town.
According to reports, the attackers killed the victim during the incident and went on to abduct his female partner, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
Eyewitnesses said the victims were riding home on a motorcycle when they were intercepted by armed assailants believed to be kidnappers.
During the attack, the male victim reportedly resisted the assailants in an attempt to prevent the abduction but was shot in the process.
The gunmen subsequently fled the scene with the woman, whose identity had yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
The incident has sparked concern among residents, particularly due to its proximity to a military checkpoint, raising questions about security in the area.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed frustration over what he described as a worsening security situation in the Auchi axis, noting that kidnapping incidents had persisted for over six months without significant arrests.
“The trend is becoming increasingly alarming, with attacks occurring with little deterrence, even in areas close to security formations.
“This has intensified calls for stronger security measures and improved intelligence-led operations to address the situation.
“Community members are urging greater collaboration between security agencies and residents, emphasising the need for vigilance and timely reporting of suspicious activities,” the resident said.
Speaking on the phone on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said eyewitnesses reported that the suspected kidnappers were dressed in military uniforms.
“I am not saying they are soldiers, but witnesses said the attackers wore army camouflage. The young man was shot and later rushed to a health facility, where he was confirmed dead.
“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the suspects and rescue the woman,” she said.
