Top 10 countries with most natural gas reserves globally

Natural gas has become a backbone of the global energy system, supplying electricity, fueling industries, and supporting households across continents.

As countries push for cleaner energy alternatives compared to coal and oil, demand for natural gas continues to rise steadily.

However, despite its importance, this vital resource is not evenly spread around the world.

A recent analysis using data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the Oil & Gas Journal, compiled by Petroleumpriceng, shows that a small group of countries controls the majority of proven natural gas reserves.

These are reserves that can be extracted profitably with current technology and market conditions.

The report reveals that just 10 countries account for about 83 percent of global natural gas reserves, underlining how concentrated this energy resource is.

Below is a breakdown of the top 10 countries with the largest proven natural gas reserves:

1. Russia – 1,688 tcf

Russia leads by a wide margin, thanks to its vast gas deposits located mainly in Siberia.

The country remains one of the world’s biggest exporters, supplying gas to both Europe and Asia, making it a key player in global energy markets.

2. Iran – 1,200 tcf

Iran holds the second-largest reserves, with a significant portion found in the South Pars field.

Although international sanctions have limited its export capacity, natural gas remains crucial for meeting its domestic energy needs.

3. Qatar – 843 tcf

Qatar has built a strong economy around natural gas, especially liquefied natural gas (LNG).

It shares the massive gas field with Iran and stands as one of the leading LNG exporters globally.

4. United States – 615 tcf

The United States combines large reserves with advanced drilling technologies, particularly in shale gas production.

This has positioned the country as both a top producer and exporter of natural gas.

5. Turkmenistan – 400 tcf

Turkmenistan possesses huge gas reserves but faces challenges in expanding exports due to limited infrastructure. Most of its gas is currently exported to China.

6. Saudi Arabia – 336 tcf

While globally known for oil, Saudi Arabia is increasingly investing in natural gas to diversify its energy mix and reduce the use of oil for domestic power generation.

7. United Arab Emirates – 290 tcf

The UAE continues to grow its gas sector to support industrial development and ensure energy security, complementing its oil-driven economy.

8. China – 265 tcf

China’s reserves play a key role in meeting its growing energy demand. The country is also actively developing shale gas resources to reduce dependence on imports.

9. Nigeria – 209 tcf

Nigeria holds the largest natural gas reserves in Africa. Although a significant portion remains untapped, ongoing efforts aim to boost LNG exports and increase domestic gas utilisation for power and industry.

10. Venezuela – 195 tcf

Venezuela rounds off the list with substantial gas reserves that complement its vast oil wealth.

However, economic difficulties and underinvestment have slowed development in the sector.
