NUJ slams alleged harassment of journalists by Abia Gov Otti

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly criticised what it described as the harassment and verbal intimidation of journalists by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, following a recent media engagement.
In a statement signed by its President, Alhassan Yahya, the union said the incident occurred after a journalist asked the governor to provide verifiable data showing the impact of his administration’s policies on residents of Abia State.
The NUJ expressed concern that a reporter carrying out his professional duty by requesting measurable evidence of governance outcomes would face hostility, noting that public officials are accountable to the people and that journalists serve as a vital link between government and citizens.
According to the union, asking for facts and data is not disrespectful but a fundamental responsibility of journalists, especially when issues of public welfare are involved. It warned that any attempt to intimidate the media for demanding accountability threatens democratic values and press freedom.

The NUJ also reminded public office holders that freedom of expression and press freedom are protected under Nigeria’s constitution, urging leaders to remain open, tolerant, and respectful toward journalists.
The union called on Governor Otti to refrain from actions that could intimidate media practitioners, provide verifiable data when requested, and publicly reaffirm his commitment to transparency and constructive engagement with the press.
Reaffirming its stance, the NUJ said it would continue to defend the rights, safety, and professional integrity of journalists in Abia State and across Nigeria, stressing that a free press should be seen as a partner in national development rather than an adversary.
