Dr. Peter P. Akpe is a seasoned educator, lawmaker, and political strategist with extensive experience in both legislative and executive governance.

Having served in key roles such as Majority Leader of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and Deputy Chief of Staff, he currently holds the position of Chief of Staff to the Governor of Bayelsa State.

Recently, following the passing of the former deputy governor, Akpe has been confirmed as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished career.

Early life

Dr. Peter Pereotubo Akpe was born in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

From an early age, he demonstrated a passion for learning, which guided his academic pursuits.

He earned a degree in Education from Rivers State College of Education, then advanced to Rivers State University for a Master’s and PhD in Educational Management and Planning.

These studies equipped him with skills in leadership, policy analysis, and organizational management, foundations that would shape his career in public service.

Academic career

Akpe began his professional life as a lecturer at Niger Delta University, where he contributed to educational policy, institutional growth, and research.

His time in academia sharpened his analytical approach and provided him with a deep understanding of how systems work, an understanding he would later bring to governance and public administration.

Entry into Politics and Legislative Service

Transitioning from academia to public service, Akpe first served as a legislative aide and political adviser, building experience in grassroots engagement and policy coordination.

He later won election to the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, representing Sagbama Constituency 2.

Rising to become the Majority Leader, Akpe coordinated the legislative agenda of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), sponsored bills on youth empowerment, education, and rural development, and ensured smooth passage of executive policies.

His legislative career was marked by constructive engagement, effective oversight, and a reputation for diligence.

Executive Roles and Chief of Staff

Following his time in the Assembly, Akpe was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri.

His administrative efficiency and political tact earned him elevation to Chief of Staff at Government House, Yenagoa.

In this capacity, he oversaw inter-ministerial coordination, policy implementation, and strategic planning for the governor’s office.

Known for his calm and methodical leadership, he became a key stabilizing force in the administration.

Personal life

Beyond his professional roles, Akpe is an ordained clergyman with the Redeem Christian Church of God, reflecting his commitment to service and ethical leadership.

His colleagues and the public respect him for his low-profile, results-driven style, combining technocratic expertise with political insight.

Appointment

In February 2026, following the death of former Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo in December 2025, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly confirmed Akpe as Deputy Governor.

His appointment is seen as a continuation of his long-standing commitment to effective governance, strategic coordination, and policy continuity in Bayelsa State.
