The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service in Kano State, a landmark infrastructure project aimed at transforming urban transportation and boosting economic activities across the state.

The ambitious rail system is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve mobility for residents, and create new opportunities for business growth in one of Northern Nigeria’s busiest commercial hubs.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced the approval while addressing members of the Kano State delegation who participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State. He described the project as a major step forward for the state’s development and a testament to ongoing efforts to modernise public infrastructure.

The disclosure was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, in Kano on Thursday.

“The project aims to provide a modern, efficient, and affordable mass transit system, connecting key districts and enhancing mobility for the residents.

‘It is expected to stimulate trade and investment, improve quality of life, and position Kano as a major transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.

“The Kano State Government would work closely with federal agencies to ensure smooth implementation and transparency,” the Governor added.

Yusuf expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for approving the project and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to aligning with supportive policies and infrastructure development initiatives.
