Meet Amaka Onwughalu, Fidelity Bank’s first female Board Chair

Amaka Onwughalu is a widely respected financial services professional with decades of experience spanning banking, investment and corporate governance.
Over the years, she has built a strong reputation for steady leadership, sound judgement and deep understanding of financial institutions and boardroom dynamics.
Background
Onwughalu combines practical industry experience with a solid academic foundation.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of Buckingham, a Master of Science degree in Corporate Governance from Leeds University in the United Kingdom, and an MBA from the University of Port Harcourt.
She has also completed executive education programmes at leading global business schools, including INSEAD Business School in Fontainebleau, France; IMD Business School in Lausanne, Switzerland; Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge; and Columbia Business School.
These programmes focused on leadership development, strategy, change management and long-term growth.
Banking career
Her career reflects some of the most senior roles in Nigeria’s banking industry.
She was Deputy Managing Director of Skye Bank Plc from 2008 to 2016 and served on the bank’s Board of Directors.
While at Skye Bank, she oversaw major business units such as Treasury and Financial Institutions, Corporate Banking, Project and Structured Finance, International Subsidiaries and the International Funding Group.
Earlier in her career, she served as Chief Executive Officer and Group Managing Director of Mainstreet Bank Limited, leading the bank during a challenging period in the sector.
She also held the role of Executive Director at SFS Real Estate Investment Trust and served as a Director at Mainstreet Microfinance Bank Limited, expanding her experience across real estate finance and microfinance.
Professional memberships
She holds several respected professional certifications and fellowships.

These include Senior Fellow of the Institute of Internal Auditors of Nigeria, Fellow of the Institute of Credit Administration and Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management. She is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and the Institute of Directors.
Positions held
Onwughalu is the Chief Executive Officer of Blueshield Financial Services Limited, a position she has held since 2017.
At Blueshield, she provides strategic financial advisory, investment guidance and structured finance support to clients.
She also serves as a Director at Aquila Capital Limited and remains actively engaged in Nigeria’s wider corporate and professional space.
Personal life
Amaka Onwughalu is a Christian from the Nigerian Igbo tribe, she is happily married with children.
Appointment
In January 2026, Onwughalu reached a historic milestone with her appointment as chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc, becoming the first woman to hold the position since the bank was founded 37 years ago.
Her emergence followed the retirement of Mr Mustafa Chike-Obi on December 31, 2025.
Fidelity Bank described her appointment as a clear signal of its commitment to strong governance, experience and continuity at the board level.
Before assuming the role of chairman, she had served as a Non-Executive Director of the bank since 2020.
During that period, she played an active role in board oversight, chairing the Board Credit Committee and the Board Committee on Bank Capitalisation.
She was also a member of key committees, including the Board Finance and General-Purpose Committee, the Board Remuneration, Nomination and Governance Committee, and the Board Risk Management Committee, which she had earlier chaired.
