Born on June 23, 1970, in Delta State, Dr. Elumelu hails from Onicha-Ukwu in Aniocha North Local Government Area and is of Igbo descent.
She studied medicine at the University of Benin, earning her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees.
Her early career included paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency medicine, and surgery, including professional practice in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Elumelu transitioned from clinical practice to healthcare management and investment.
She founded and chairs Avon Healthcare Limited, a leading health maintenance organization in Nigeria, and serves as CEO of Avon Medical Practice, a growing network of hospitals and clinics.
