Northern Minorities Group applauds Northern governors, demands immediate publication of terrorism financiers

The Northern Nigeria Minorities Group has applauded the governors of the 19 northern states for what it described as a bold and unified move to tackle the escalating insecurity in the region.
In a statement signed by the group’s convener, Chief Jacob Edi (Kakaki Bassa-Nge), the organisation praised the governors for agreeing to establish a ₦1 billion monthly joint security intervention fund, with each state contributing equally.
According to the group, the decision represents “a commendable demonstration of regional leadership” and signals a renewed commitment to confronting terrorism and banditry through coordinated action rather than fragmented responses.
But alongside the commendation came a strong and urgent demand: the Federal Government must immediately reveal the identities of individuals, organisations, and networks financing terrorism in Nigeria.
The group stressed that the Nigerian state already possesses the intelligence capacity and monitoring tools needed to expose those bankrolling violent groups—citing the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), Bank Verification Number (BVN) system, National Identity Number (NIN) database, and other statutory financial tracking mechanisms.

“Those who underwrite these atrocities have undermined national cohesion for far too long,” the statement read. “Continued secrecy only serves to embolden them.”
The group also expressed confidence in the current security efforts under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting what it called a “renewed momentum” in military and security operations nationwide. The early results, it said, reflect a more assertive national security posture.
It concluded that publicly naming terrorism financiers—combined with the intensified security actions already underway—would significantly strengthen Nigeria’s fight against insurgency and move the country closer to lasting peace.
