The son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, has officially assumed office as the new Chairman of Agege Local Government, following the resignation of the former chairman, Tunde Azeez.

Abdul-Ganiyu’s emergence comes after a period of political tension, as he was initially dropped from the race during the build-up to the 2025 local government elections due to opposition within the ruling party. However, with Azeez’s unexpected resignation, the younger Obasa has now been confirmed to take over the leadership of the council.

His emergence on Wednesday, however, did not come as a surprise to many political observers, as Azeez had been visibly absent from council activities for months.

Azeez proceeded on medical leave shortly after the new administration was sworn in on July 27, 2025, leaving Abdul-Ganiyu—then the Acting Chairman—to oversee mobilization and grassroots engagement.

In a letter read by the Leader of the House, Adeshina Haruna, Azeez formally resigned, citing persistent health challenges that had made it difficult for him to perform his duties.

Following the reading of the resignation letter, lawmakers in the council unanimously voted to confirm Abdul-Ganiyu as the new Chairman of Agege Local Government.

The legislators defended their decision, noting his contributions to the council since assuming office in an acting capacity, as well as the need to prevent a leadership vacuum.

“His appointment is a testament to his credibility and experience, and a signal of the council’s commitment to ensuring governance remains uninterrupted and responsive to the needs of the people,” the lawmakers said.

They also commended Azeez for his service and wished him full recovery.

Azeez’s resignation comes barely two months after he went on medical leave, paving the way for Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa’s transition from Acting Chairman to substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government.
