Netanyahu accuses Albanese of ‘betrayal’ as Israel-Australia tensions deepen

Diplomatic ties between Israel and Australia deteriorated sharply this week after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, of betraying Israel and abandoning the country’s Jewish community.

“History will remember Anthony Albanese for what he is: a weak politician,” Netanyahu said on Tuesday, in one of his harshest rebukes yet of a Western ally.

The comments followed Australia’s decision on Monday to bar entry to a far-right Israeli lawmaker from Netanyahu’s ruling coalition.

In a swift retaliatory move, Israel revoked the visas of Australian representatives accredited to the Palestinian Authority.

The escalating row comes against the backdrop of Canberra’s recent announcement that it would join the United Kingdom, France, and Canada in formally recognising a Palestinian state — a move welcomed by Palestinians but condemned by Israel.

Australian Immigration Minister Tony Burke dismissed Netanyahu’s remarks, saying the Israeli leader was “lashing out” because of Canberra’s policy shift.

“Our decision reflects a growing international consensus that a two-state solution is the only path to lasting peace,” Burke said.

The diplomatic spat has unsettled members of Australia’s Jewish community, many of whom expressed concern about being caught in the middle of a political confrontation.

Albanese’s government has sought to balance its recognition of Palestinian statehood with reassurances that Australia remains committed to Israel’s security.

Analysts say the fallout underscores Israel’s increasing isolation as more Western allies take steps to formally support Palestinian statehood, despite Netanyahu’s insistence that such recognition rewards “terrorism and extremism.”

With relations between Canberra and Jerusalem now at their lowest point in years, officials on both sides acknowledged there was little sign of an immediate resolution.
