Army officer under investigation after alleged assault on airline staff at Srinagar airport

Authorities in Indian-administered Kashmir have launched an investigation into a senior Indian army officer accused of physically assaulting an airline staff member at Srinagar airport after a dispute over excess baggage fees.
The incident, which occurred on 26 July, gained national attention over the weekend after a video went viral showing the officer, identified as Colonel Ritesh Kumar Singh, striking a SpiceJet employee with a metal stand.
SpiceJet confirmed the altercation and said one of its staff suffered a spinal fracture and serious injuries to his jaw as a result of the assault.
“We are shocked by the incident and are cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities,” the airline said in a statement.
Colonel Singh, however, has denied any wrongdoing, claiming he was “provoked” by the airline staff. Reports suggest he has also filed a police complaint against SpiceJet, alleging that he was manhandled during the confrontation.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case and said they are examining CCTV footage, witness statements, and medical reports to determine the facts.
The Indian Army has acknowledged the incident and said it is awaiting the outcome of the civilian investigation before deciding on any internal disciplinary measures.
“The matter is being looked into with due seriousness, and appropriate action will be taken based on findings,” a defence spokesperson stated.
The incident has sparked debate on social media, with calls for accountability from both the military and civil aviation authorities, as concerns grow over increasing incidents of violence against airline personnel in India.
