Breaking…Former President Muhammadu Buhari passes away at 81

Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
The 81-year-old former leader passed away on Saturday afternoon at a private clinic in London, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
A statement released by his longtime spokesperson, Garba Shehu, confirmed the development:
“INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIRRAJIUUN.
The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.
May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”

Buhari, a retired Major General and former military Head of State (1983–1985), served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, having won two consecutive terms under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He is remembered for his anti-corruption crusade, agricultural reforms, and controversial policies that defined his eight years in office. His presidency also witnessed major security challenges, economic restructuring efforts, and intense political polarization.
Tributes have already begun pouring in from across Nigeria and around the world, as leaders, institutions, and citizens reflect on the legacy of a man who shaped modern Nigerian politics.
Funeral arrangements and official statements from the federal government are expected in the coming hours.
