A prominent Kenyan opposition Member of Parliament, Charles Ong’ondo Were, has been shot dead in what authorities are calling a targeted and premeditated attack in the capital, Nairobi.

The assassination occurred late Wednesday evening when gunmen on a motorcycle intercepted the MP’s vehicle. According to police, the attackers had been trailing the car before one of them dismounted and opened fire at close range, fatally wounding Were.

“The nature of this crime appears to be both targeted and predetermined,” police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said in a statement released early Thursday. He added that investigations were underway and that law enforcement agencies were pursuing all leads.

Were’s driver and bodyguard, both reportedly unharmed, rushed the injured MP to Nairobi Hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The brazen killing has sent shockwaves across the country, raising fresh concerns over political violence and the safety of public officials. Local media have reported that Ong’ondo Were had raised alarms just two months ago about receiving threats to his life, though it remains unclear whether any protective measures were subsequently put in place.

Charles Ong’ondo Were, a vocal figure in the opposition benches, was known for his criticism of government corruption and for championing youth empowerment initiatives in his constituency. Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, with fellow lawmakers calling for swift justice.

“This is a dark day for Kenya’s democracy,” said opposition leader Raila Odinga. “Charles was a fearless advocate for his people. We demand a full and transparent investigation.”

Police have yet to confirm any arrests. Meanwhile, authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and appealing to witnesses to come forward.

A special parliamentary session has been scheduled to honor Were’s legacy, as the country grapples with the implications of the high-profile killing.
