The first images of Pope Francis’ tomb at the historic Santa Maria Maggiore basilica have been released, showing a simple and poignant tribute to the late pontiff.

A single white rose rests atop the stone tomb, which bears his papal name beneath a softly illuminated crucifix. The scene captures the quiet dignity of the private ceremony that followed his public funeral at the Vatican on Saturday.

Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88, was laid to rest in the basilica he held close to his heart throughout his life as a cardinal and later as pontiff. Santa Maria Maggiore, one of Rome’s four major basilicas, was a place of frequent pilgrimage for him.

By early Sunday morning, mourners had already begun queuing outside the church, eager to pay their final respects to the pope who had touched millions with his humility and compassion.

Church officials said the tomb would remain open to the public for those wishing to offer prayers and remembrance in the coming days.
