Lagos announces date for LG elections

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has confirmed that local government elections will be held across the state on July 12, 2025. This announcement was made on Friday by Mr. Tope Ojo, the Head of Public Affairs at LASIEC.
The elections will allow voters to elect chairpersons for the 57 councils and councillors for the 376 wards across Lagos. Ojo also noted that in the event of a re-run, it would take place on July 19, 2025.
Lagos State consists of 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), which are subdivided into a total of 376 wards. Ojo emphasized that the selected election date was chosen to ensure a smooth transition and continuity in governance, thereby preventing any leadership vacuum at the local level.
The electoral body has already issued the official Notice of Election, marking the official start of the electoral process.
“The Election Guidelines will be published on April 17,” Ojo said.
He also outlined the timeline for campaigns and rallies, which will commence on April 18 and conclude on July 9.

Submission of Nomination Forms for substituted and sole candidates will take place from June 18 to June 25.
LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), emphasized the commission’s commitment to a transparent and inclusive process.
He stated that the commission would ensure a level playing field for all political parties and stakeholders.
“We are committed to conducting a free, fair, inclusive, and credible election,” he assured.
Okikiolu-Ighile also advised political parties and candidates to strictly adhere to the electoral timetable.
