Israeli air strike on Beirut suburb kills 4, escalating regional tensions

An Israeli air strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut has killed four people and injured seven, Lebanon’s health ministry announced, heightening concerns over the fragile ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
The attack targeted the Dahieh district, a Hezbollah stronghold, and marks the second such strike in recent days, despite a truce that has been in effect since November.
The Israeli military stated that the operation was aimed at a Hezbollah operative accused of assisting Hamas in planning attacks against Israeli civilians. Hezbollah has not yet responded to the strike.
Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun condemned the attack, calling it a “dangerous warning” and a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty. His statement added to growing fears that the ceasefire, already under strain, could collapse, reigniting full-scale hostilities along the Israel-Lebanon border.
The incident has drawn international concern, with calls for restraint from global leaders and diplomatic bodies.
The United Nations, which has been monitoring the ceasefire, urged both sides to avoid escalation and reaffirm their commitment to diplomatic solutions.

Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war last year, Hezbollah has repeatedly exchanged fire with Israeli forces along the border, though both parties had largely maintained a delicate balance to prevent a wider conflict.
However, recent Israeli operations targeting Hezbollah-linked figures in Lebanon, including previous strikes on Dahieh, have further inflamed tensions.
Local residents expressed alarm over the increasing attacks, with many fearing the renewed hostilities could push Lebanon deeper into instability.
“We are already suffering from economic collapse and political uncertainty,” said a Beirut resident. “Another war would be devastating.”
The situation remains fluid as both nations weigh their next moves. Observers warn that without renewed diplomatic efforts, the region could see a dangerous escalation in violence.
