Rivers sole administrator releases withheld LG allocations, assures prompt salary payments

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has announced the release of previously withheld local government allocations, assuring workers that measures are in place to ensure the prompt payment of salaries.
Speaking during a meeting with Heads of Local Government Administrators in Port Harcourt, Ibas described the move as a vital step toward restoring stability and progress in the state.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing administrative and financial concerns affecting local government operations.
Ibas also expressed concern over the economic challenges facing the Niger Delta region, despite its vast natural resources. He stressed the need for transformative policies to maximize the region’s potential and improve the livelihoods of its people.
“This is unacceptable,” he stated, stressing the importance of transformation and accountability.
The administrator acknowledged the hardship caused by salary payment delays and reassured affected workers that his administration is committed to addressing their concerns.
“I feel the pain of the workers,” he said, confirming that the withheld funds had been disbursed and that salaries would be paid without further delay. However, he warned that strict financial accountability measures would be enforced.
Ibas, a retired vice admiral and former Chief of Naval Staff, directed all local government areas to submit their wage bills with supporting documentation to the office of the Head of Service.

He emphasized that financial mismanagement would not be tolerated, vowing to scrutinize the handling of public funds and take action against any irregularities.
“Good governance is not just a slogan but a commitment to changing the negative narrative within the next six months,” he added.
Ibas also highlighted the importance of collaboration with traditional rulers and security agencies to enhance grassroots security.
“You must take the lead in ensuring security within your domains,” he urged local government administrators.
In response, Clifford Paul, President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and Administrator of Port Harcourt Local Government Area, praised the strides made in the state despite political challenges.
He commended the Federal Government for appointing Ibas, attributing the decision to his leadership and competence.
Paul pledged to support peace and stability while urging the administrator to prioritize workers’ welfare. He noted that local government employees were owed two months’ salaries but expressed optimism following the release of the withheld allocations.
He encouraged stakeholders to use this opportunity to rebuild trust and foster unity in the state.
