German spy agency suspects COVID-19 originated in lab

Germany’s foreign intelligence service, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), believed there was an 80-90% chance that the COVID-19 pandemic originated from an accidental laboratory leak in China, according to newly uncovered reports by German media.
Two newspapers, Welt am Sonntag and Süddeutsche Zeitung, claim to have obtained details of a 2020 intelligence assessment that was never made public. According to these reports, the BND had indications that the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) was conducting experiments to enhance virus transmissibility in humans for research purposes.
The findings align with ongoing debates over the origins of the pandemic, which has sparked global controversy. While some scientists and intelligence agencies have considered the possibility of a lab-related incident, China has repeatedly denied the claim.
Beijing responded to the reports by reaffirming its stance that the origins of COVID-19 “should be determined by scientists,” rather than intelligence services. The Chinese government also pointed to a 2021 World Health Organization (WHO) investigation, which concluded that a laboratory origin was “extremely unlikely” and instead emphasized natural transmission from animals to humans.
The revelation of the BND’s unpublished assessment adds to a growing body of international scrutiny over China’s handling of the early outbreak. In recent years, the lab-leak hypothesis has gained traction in some Western intelligence circles, though no conclusive evidence has been presented.

The German government has not officially commented on the reports, and it remains unclear why the BND’s assessment was never made public.
Since the start of the pandemic, theories about the virus’s origin have ranged from natural spillover at a seafood market in Wuhan to an accidental escape from a research facility. The latter theory gained renewed attention after U.S. intelligence agencies delivered mixed assessments on the matter, with some considering a lab origin plausible while others favored a natural source.
The Wuhan Institute of Virology, which has been at the center of speculation, conducts research on coronaviruses and has worked with international scientists in the past. Chinese authorities have consistently denied that the facility played any role in the emergence of COVID-19.
While the WHO initially ruled out the lab-leak theory, calls for further independent investigations have persisted. Some countries, including the U.S., have criticized China for a lack of transparency in providing access to data and samples from the early days of the outbreak.
As new revelations emerge, the debate over COVID-19’s origins continues to be a politically charged issue with implications for global health security and international relations.
