Troops arrest suspected militia linked to herdsman killing, massive cattle rustling in Plateau

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 3 Division and Operation Safe Haven have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against insecurity in Plateau State, arresting a suspected militia member believed to be involved in the murder of a herdsman and the theft of over 1,200 cattle.
The suspect was captured during a coordinated clearance operation in the early hours of Friday, May 30, at Hura village in Bassa Local Government Area. The successful operation followed credible intelligence, according to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama.
Military sources confirmed that the operation also led to the recovery of key items, including an AK-47 rifle, a loaded magazine, 26 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, N2,500 in cash, and objects suspected to be charms — indicating possible ties to local armed groups.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the arrested suspect is linked to a criminal network involved in the killing of a herdsman and the brazen rustling of 1,250 cows in Tomborong village, Riyom LGA, on May 27.
“The suspect is currently in custody and cooperating with investigators on the identities and locations of other members of the syndicate and their cache of weapons,” a military source said.
Security forces say efforts have been intensified to locate and apprehend other members of the gang responsible for the recent spate of criminal activities in the area.
