In a landmark ruling that has brought a measure of justice to a grieving nation, a Lagos High Court has sentenced Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, to death by hanging for the brutal murder of 22-year-old fashion designer, Bamise Ayanwola.

Justice Sherifat Sonaike delivered the judgment on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the Tafawa Balewa Square division of the court, closing the chapter on a case that captured the heart of the nation and ignited widespread calls for safer public transportation.

Bamise was declared missing in February 2022 after she boarded a BRT bus operated by Ominikoron.

Her disappearance sparked nationwide concern and days later, her lifeless body was discovered, sending shockwaves through the country. The tragic incident led to mass protests and an outcry over the lack of safety for commuters—particularly women—using public transport.

During the trial, the prosecution presented overwhelming evidence against Ominikoron, establishing that the crime was premeditated and deserving of the harshest punishment. The court found him guilty on all counts, sealing his fate with the maximum sentence under the law.

For many Nigerians, the case has become a painful symbol of the dangers faced by women while simply trying to navigate daily life.

Human rights groups, transport unions, and citizens alike have followed the proceedings closely, demanding justice and reform.
