The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to revitalizing the Enugu-Port Harcourt railway line, naming it a key national infrastructure priority.

This assurance was given by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, during a working visit to Governor Peter Mbah at the Enugu State Government House on Thursday.

Dr. Opeifa emphasized that the project has been receiving considerable attention and funding in the national budget, reflecting the government’s determination to boost rail transport and stimulate economic activity in the South-East and South-South regions.

Dr. Opeifa emphasized that the purpose of his visit was to strengthen collaboration between the NRC and the Enugu State Government, particularly on the Eastern Corridor rail line, which connects Port Harcourt, Aba, and Enugu.

He pointed out the growing demand for the route, especially from businesspeople and traders who rely heavily on efficient transportation systems.

Impressed by the developmental changes in Enugu, Dr. Opeifa commended Governor Mbah’s visionary leadership, describing him as a determined businessman focused on delivering results despite challenges. He also revealed that President Bola Tinubu has directed the NRC to foster strong partnerships with state governments to improve transportation and economic growth.

While urging the state to leverage the potential of the Eastern Railway Line upon completion, Dr. Opeifa also called for enhanced security around NRC facilities, which have been targets of vandalism by scrap metal thieves.

Governor Peter Mbah, in his response, welcomed the NRC’s efforts to restore the Eastern railway corridor, noting the historical significance of Enugu to the Corporation since the days of coal exportation in 1918. He highlighted that the railway revival aligns with the demands of South-East leaders, which President Tinubu had approved during his recent visit to the state.

The governor also disclosed ongoing regional plans to establish a common market that would require efficient rail connectivity to facilitate trade.

He further revealed plans for an intra-state rail network that would link with the NRC’s main lines, and pledged continued support to ensure the optimal functioning of NRC facilities, including the Corporation’s clinic, while committing to protect their assets from vandalism and encroachment.
