Gov Okpebholo suspends security commander, unauthorized vigilante groups after Uromi killings

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has taken decisive action in response to the tragic killings in Uromi, ordering the immediate suspension of the commander of the Edo State Security Corps, retired Commissioner of Police Friday Ibadin.
In addition, the governor has directed the suspension of all unauthorized vigilante groups operating across the state.
The move is aimed at restoring order and ensuring that only properly registered security outfits operate within Edo State.
An official statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, clarified that the vigilante group involved in the deadly incident on March 27 had no formal authorization or registration with the state’s security corps.
Governor Okpebholo’s swift response underscores his administration’s commitment to maintaining security and preventing further incidents of unlawful violence.
He stated, “Its actions do not reflect the core values, character and principles of the Okpebholo administration, or the objectives of the corps as enshrined in the Edo State Security Corps Governance Law.”

The statement further revealed that after reviewing preliminary findings on the incident, the governor decided to suspend all illegal vigilante groups and relieve Ibadin of his duties.
Investigations into the attack are ongoing, with authorities confirming the arrest of 14 suspects, while a special team deployed by the Inspector General of Police continues efforts to track down others involved.
“The Government of Edo State reiterates its belief in the constitutionally guaranteed rights of citizens to move freely or engage in lawful business in any part of the country,” the statement emphasized.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration has also reached out to the families of the victims, local community leaders, and officials from Kano State, where most of the deceased reportedly originated.
The government is urging calm while assuring the public that justice will be served transparently and efficiently.
