Ahunna Eziakonwa: Championing inclusion, innovation and growth across Africa

Ahunna Eziakonwa is a Nigerian development economist and humanitarian leader who serves as Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Assistant Administrator and Director of the Africa Regional Bureau at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

In this role, she provides strategic leadership for UNDP operations across 46 African countries, overseeing a workforce of more than 4,000 personnel and directing development programmes valued at approximately $1.2 billion annually.

Known for her commitment to inclusive growth, economic transformation and youth empowerment, Eziakonwa has become a leading advocate for reshaping perceptions of Africa and unlocking the continent’s vast development potential.

Background

Born in Nigeria, Eziakonwa built a strong academic foundation that prepared her for a career in international development and humanitarian service.

She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Benin, Nigeria, before advancing her studies abroad.

She later obtained a Master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs in the United States, where she specialized in Africa’s political and economic development.

She also attended the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School Executive Programme, gaining advanced knowledge in development policy, leadership and innovative approaches to solving global challenges.

Service at the United Nations

With over 20 years of experience within the United Nations system, Eziakonwa has held several high-level leadership positions across Africa.

Before assuming her current role in 2018, she served as the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia, Uganda and Lesotho.

During these assignments, she coordinated development initiatives, humanitarian interventions and partnerships between governments, development agencies and civil society organizations.

She also served as Chief of the Africa Section at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), where she supervised more than 15 country operations.

In that capacity, she managed responses to humanitarian crises, natural disasters, conflicts and post-crisis recovery efforts across the continent.

Championing Africa’s transformation

Since taking charge of UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Africa, Eziakonwa has focused on promoting inclusive development, economic opportunities and social progress.

Her development vision, titled “Africa’s Promise: The UNDP Renewed Strategic Offer in Africa,” emphasizes identifying and maximizing opportunities rather than focusing solely on challenges.

Through this approach, she has encouraged governments, development institutions and private sector actors to invest in Africa’s strengths, innovation and human capital.

She has consistently advocated for greater support for young entrepreneurs, women leaders and marginalized communities, believing that inclusive growth is essential for sustainable development across the continent.

Personal life

Outside her professional responsibilities, Ahunna Eziakonwa is a wife and mother.

Despite her demanding international role, she remains committed to promoting human dignity, equality and opportunities for future generations across Africa.

Key initiatives and innovations

Eziakonwa has been instrumental in launching several initiatives designed to accelerate Africa’s development and strengthen local ownership of economic growth.

Among the notable programmes she has championed are:

• Africa Influencers for Development (AI4D), an initiative promoting the use of Africa’s resources and wealth to drive the continent’s development.
• The Africa Young Women Leaders Initiative, aimed at preparing the next generation of female leaders across Africa.
• Africa Innovates Magazine, a platform showcasing innovation, entrepreneurship and creative solutions emerging from the continent.

The Africa Borderlands Centre, which focuses on improving development outcomes in border communities often affected by insecurity and limited access to services.

Leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic

Eziakonwa played a central role in coordinating UNDP’s socioeconomic response to the COVID-19 pandemic across Africa.

Her leadership helped support countries dealing with economic disruptions, job losses, healthcare pressures and recovery planning.

She also co-chaired the United Nations Africa Regional Collaborative Platform, which oversees the implementation of regional reforms introduced by the UN Secretary-General.

Through this platform, she worked with various UN agencies to improve coordination and maximize development impact across African countries.

Experience beyond the United Nations

Before joining the United Nations, Eziakonwa was actively involved in civil society and international development work.

She worked with Initiatives of Change, where she served as International Coordinator for the Creators of Peace – Women’s Initiative.

Her work focused on promoting peacebuilding, dialogue and women’s empowerment in different parts of the world.
