Amb. Sola Enikanolaiye: From foreign service veteran to ministerial office

Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye is a seasoned Nigerian diplomat with more than three decades of experience in the foreign service.
He currently serves as the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs following his swearing-in into the Federal Executive Council by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Before his ministerial appointment, he worked closely with the Presidency as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations, where he contributed to shaping Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements and external policy direction.
Background
Born on September 14, 1959, in Igbagun, Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State, he built a reputation for academic excellence from an early age.
He attended Victory College of Commerce, Edidi, Kwara State, where he graduated in 1977 with outstanding results, earning awards as the Best Student in English Language, Economics and Biology.
His academic journey continued at Ahmadu Bello University, where he studied Political Science between 1977 and 1981 on a Kwara State Government scholarship.
He graduated with a First Class Honours degree, distinguishing himself among his peers.
Determined to deepen his knowledge of diplomacy and international relations, Enikanolaiye later obtained distinctions in Postgraduate Diplomatic Studies from University of Oxford in 1991 and a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy from University of Lagos in 1992.
Entry into foreign service
Enikanolaiye joined Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 4, 1982, beginning what would become a distinguished 35-year diplomatic career.
His exceptional abilities became evident early when he emerged as the Best Officer Trainee at the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy in 1984.
Over the years, he underwent specialised diplomatic training in several countries, including Germany, the United States, China, Egypt and the United Kingdom, equipping him with extensive knowledge of international relations and diplomacy.
Rising through diplomatic ranks
Throughout his career, Enikanolaiye served in several strategic diplomatic missions and government positions.
His overseas assignments took him to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Belgrade, Serbia; Ottawa, Canada; London, United Kingdom; and New Delhi, India, where he served as Nigeria’s Head of Mission.
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters, he worked closely with successive foreign ministers and held positions as Deputy Director and Director in the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
His expertise and professionalism earned him promotion to substantive Director in 2010.
Three years later, he was appointed Ambassador in-situ while remaining at the ministry’s headquarters, a recognition of his influence in shaping Nigeria’s diplomatic direction.
Role in Nigeria’s democratic foreign policy rebirth
One of the defining periods of Enikanolaiye’s career came during the administration of Olusegun Obasanjo.
In August 1999, shortly after Nigeria returned to democratic rule, he was recruited by veteran diplomat Patrick Dele-Cole to serve as Special Assistant in the Presidency’s international relations team.
Working behind the scenes, Enikanolaiye contributed to Nigeria’s efforts to rebuild its global image after years of military rule.
He participated in policy engagements that focused on debt relief, regional peace initiatives and restoring Nigeria’s standing in international affairs.

During this period, Nigeria played key roles in conflict resolution efforts in Liberia and Sierra Leone, supported the restoration of constitutional order in São Tomé and Príncipe, and participated actively in the transformation of the Organisation of African Unity into the African Union.
Colleagues from that era describe him as a meticulous scholar-diplomat known for detailed policy analysis and thorough documentation of high-level diplomatic engagements.
Permanent secretary and peak of public service
Enikanolaiye reached the highest levels of Nigeria’s civil service when he was appointed Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 5, 2016.
The appointment placed him at the apex of the ministry after decades of service and reflected the confidence reposed in his experience and expertise.
Unlike many permanent secretaries who are redeployed across ministries, he remained in the Foreign Affairs Ministry, where his institutional knowledge and diplomatic experience were considered invaluable.
He retired from public service in August 2017 after completing an unblemished and highly respected career spanning 35 years.
International representation and global engagements
During his diplomatic career, Enikanolaiye represented Nigeria at numerous international forums and high-level meetings.
He participated in engagements involving the Economic Community of West African States, African Union, European Union, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, United Nations, the Commonwealth and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development.
These assignments took him to major diplomatic centres across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas, further broadening his international experience.
Return to government under Tinubu
Six years after retiring from the civil service, Enikanolaiye returned to government service in October 2023 when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed him Senior Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs and International Relations.
In that role, he provided strategic advice on foreign policy, regional stability and Nigeria’s diplomatic priorities.
His experience was considered instrumental in strengthening the administration’s foreign relations framework.
Family life
Beyond diplomacy, Ambassador Enikanolaiye is a family man who is married with children.
His life story reflects a combination of academic excellence, professional discipline and decades of dedicated service to Nigeria’s foreign relations sector.
From a brilliant student in Kogi State to one of the country’s most respected diplomats, Enikanolaiye’s career has been defined by steady advancement, strategic influence and a commitment to advancing Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.
Appointment as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs
On April 29, 2026, President Tinubu nominated Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s foreign policy architecture.
Following Senate confirmation, he was sworn into the Federal Executive Council in June 2026.
He now works alongside Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu in managing Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements and international partnerships.
His appointment made him the second minister from Kogi State in the Tinubu administration, alongside Shuaibu Abubakar Audu.
