NUJ FCT to begin 2026 Press Week with medical outreach, health walk, public lecture

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, is set to commence its 2026 Press Week on May 16 with a series of activities focused on responsible journalism, democratic accountability, and public health.
The week-long event, scheduled to run from May 16 to May 22, will bring together journalists, policymakers, civil society groups, media stakeholders, and government officials to discuss issues affecting Nigeria’s democracy and national development.
This year’s Press Week is themed: “2027 Election: Defending Nigeria’s Democracy in the Age of Disinformation.”
According to the organisers, the programme is designed to highlight the critical role of the media in tackling misinformation and protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Activities lined up for the event include a medical outreach, a mental health walk, a public lecture and awards ceremony, a secondary school press club quiz competition, and a grand finale jean party.
The opening event, a medical outreach in partnership with Nizamiye Hospital, will take place at the NUJ FCT Secretariat in Utako, where journalists and members of the public will receive free medical consultations and health checks.
A “Walk for Mental Health” is scheduled for May 18, beginning from the Julius Berger Roundabout to the NUJ Secretariat in Utako, while the major public lecture and awards ceremony will hold on May 19 at Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

The lecture is expected to attract over 1,000 participants, including political leaders, media executives, civil society actors, and security officials.
Among the dignitaries expected at the event are Mohammed Bago, who will chair the lecture, and Abdullahi Ganduje, who will serve as co-chairman.
Former House of Representatives member, Ndudi Elumelu, is expected to deliver the keynote address, while the Inspector General of Police and other top personalities are also billed to attend.
The awards segment of the programme will recognise outstanding journalists and notable Nigerians for excellence, professionalism, and contributions to national development.
Speaking ahead of the event, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, called on journalists and stakeholders to actively participate in the activities, describing the Press Week as “a week of impact, reflection, celebration, and professional excellence.”
The council assured participants of a memorable and engaging experience throughout the celebration.
