10 feared dead in fatal bus crash while heading to Bayelsa deputy gov’s burial

A tragic road accident has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 10 people who were travelling to attend the burial ceremony of Bayelsa State’s late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

The victims were said to be passengers in an 18-seater commercial bus when the fatal crash occurred along the Toru-Orua axis of the Sagbama–Ekeremor Road, a major highway linking several communities in the area.

According to early reports from the scene, the vehicle was conveying mourners to the burial when the accident happened. While the exact cause of the crash has yet to be officially confirmed, multiple casualties were recorded, with several others said to have sustained injuries.

Several other passengers sustained injuries in the crash and were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency medical attention.

The victims were travelling to attend the burial of Senator Ewhrudjakpo, who died suddenly on December 11, 2025, at the age of 60 after collapsing in his office at the Government House in Yenagoa.

The burial is scheduled to hold today, January 30, 2026, in his hometown of Ofoni in Sagbama Local Government Area. The funeral activities have included a Day of Tributes attended by prominent personalities such as former President Goodluck Jonathan, Governor Douye Diri, and former Governor Seriake Dickson
