PSC promotes DIG, two AIGs, over 26,000 inspectors nationwide

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of a Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), two Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs), and no fewer than 26,119 inspectors in a major shake-up within the Nigeria Police Force.

The promotions were ratified during the commission’s third plenary meeting, which was held on January 29.

According to a statement from the PSC, Assistant Inspector-General of Police Funsho Adegboye was promoted to the rank of DIG. The decision was ratified under the leadership of the commission’s chairperson, Hashimu Argungu, a retired DIG.

Also elevated are Commissioners of Police Danjuma Aboki and Dansabo Idi, who were promoted to the rank of AIG after what the commission described as “a merit-based process” involving written examinations and oral interviews.

In what it termed a landmark move, the PSC further approved the promotion of 26,119 inspectors to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police II (ASP II). The inspectors qualified for promotion after participating in the recently concluded Departmental Selection Board Examination.

Before his elevation, Mr Adegboye served as the AIG in charge of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. His career spans key areas including Operations, Training, and Administration.

He has served as Divisional Police Officer and Area Commander in Ijero and Ile-Ife, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Ondo State, Commissioner of Police at the Force Intelligence Department, and Commissioner of Police in Edo State.

Mr Adegboye has also undertaken United Nations assignments in Kosovo, Liberia, Timor, and Somalia.

Mr Aboki was, prior to his promotion, the Commissioner of Police overseeing the Imo State Police Command.

Mr Idi previously served as the Acting AIG, Research and Planning at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. His service record includes postings as Divisional Police Officer in Kebbi and Kaduna states, Officer-in-Charge of the Criminal Investigation Branch in Kebbi, Area Commander in Yauri, Owo, Awe, and Kosoboso, Commander of the 63 PMF Ikorodu, Deputy Commissioner of Operations for Zone 1 Lagos, Commandant of the Police College Kaduna, and Commissioner of Police, Investment, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Congratulating the newly promoted officers, PSC chairperson Argungu reiterated the commission’s commitment to transparency and merit.

“These promotions reflect our dedication to recognizing hard work, competence, and integrity. They are a call to higher responsibility, greater service, and renewed commitment to the safety and security of our nation,” he said.

Mr Argungu also commended the PSC Standing Committee on NPF Matters, led by Taiwo Lakanu, a retired DIG, along with other board members, for their roles during the examination and interview exercises.

The commission said it remains focused on its mandate of managing human resources within the Nigeria Police Force, with the aim of strengthening professionalism, efficiency, and service delivery.
