EU leaders pledge stronger economy, military amid U.S. tariffs, security concerns

European Union leaders will commit on Thursday to strengthening the bloc’s economic and military competitiveness in response to mounting global challenges, including U.S. tariffs and uncertainty over Washington’s future defense commitments.
At a high-stakes summit in Brussels, leaders will discuss measures to boost the EU’s economic resilience and military capabilities. The move comes amid growing concerns over protectionist trade policies from the U.S. and questions about American security guarantees, particularly with the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
A key focus of the summit will also be continued support for Ukraine. All EU leaders—except Hungary’s Viktor Orban—are expected to reaffirm both financial and military aid for Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to address the summit via video link, appealing for sustained European backing as the war against Russia grinds on.

The EU’s efforts to position itself as a more independent geopolitical force have gained urgency in recent months, with calls for increased defense spending and deeper economic cooperation. However, internal divisions, particularly Hungary’s reluctance to back Ukraine, remain a challenge.
Further details on the EU’s strategic commitments are expected as the summit progresses.
